Rekey Locks
When you buy a new  home or even move into a new apartment,
Have the locks re-keyed. You do not know who the previous owner
gave keys to, the plumber, the fuel person, or the in-law who is
getting out of jail next month
Trim the Hedges
Cut back shrubs around your home, they make a great place to hide
so the police can not see a burglar lurking around.
Be Aware
When approaching your car look inside before opening the door
especially at night and also look on the floor of the back seat. (be alert)
LOCK UP
Good Security Dead bolt door locks and sturdy window latches help
prevent breakings.
Mark Things
Permanently marked items make it easier for the police to trace and return
stolen items to you. Social security numbers and driver license numbers
with the state abbreviation work best, Keep a record of marked objects.
Lighten Up
Leave your outside lights on at night. If your neighborhood is dimly
lit, ask your municipal authorities to add street lights to replace
existing bulbs with those of  higher wattage. When you're not at home
leave one of two lamps on inside your house.
When you're Away
Have a neighbor collect newspapers and mail.
Consider hiring someone to take care of your lawn,
or a House sitter for extended absences
Above all, let your neighbors know when you
will leave and when you will return.
